City Services Are Going Directly Into Puerto Vallarta Neighborhoods

Not every improvement in Puerto Vallarta happens on the Malecón or in the tourist zone.

This month, a joint program involving the Mexican Army’s 41st Military Zone and the Puerto Vallarta municipal government is taking services directly into local neighborhoods. The first activities were carried out in La Floresta and San Esteban, with additional communities scheduled to be visited during September.

The idea is fairly simple: instead of requiring residents to find their way through several different government offices, bring multiple services into the neighborhood at the same time.

During the first visits, residents were offered services including haircuts and small-appliance repairs, along with information on crime prevention and assistance available through municipal agencies.

In La Floresta, municipal public-works employees and military personnel carried out maintenance, rehabilitation and drainage-cleaning work. In San Esteban, crews worked on street cleaning.

The program includes participation from several municipal departments, including Public Security, Public Works and Infrastructure, Crime Prevention, SEAPAL Vallarta and Public Services. Officials say future visits will also provide a place for residents to report neighborhood problems and request follow-up.

People living in Puerto Vallarta often experience the city very differently depending on where they live. A problem that can be solved quickly downtown may require extra time, transportation and several stops for someone farther from municipal offices.

Bringing services into the colonias does not solve every infrastructure or public-service problem.

But it makes government a little easier to reach.

And improvements begin exactly this way — one neighborhood at a time.
